Inspirational Short Story

High Atop The Hill

She could feel the slight strain in her legs as she continued to peddle up the hill on her bicycle.  It was a warm but breezy August morning so she didn't mind pushing herself.  She didn't want to walk the bike up the hill.  Besides, she needed the exercise and the beauty that was waiting for her at the top of the hill, was well worth the struggle.  Over the past few years she had gone through so many difficult life changes.  The stress of those changes was becoming increasingly difficult to carry all alone, so it was beginning to take its toll on her in many ways.  There were times when she didn't think she was going to survive, but somehow like this current moment, she found the strength to just keep pushing herself along.  But, for how long could she continue to do it. The problem was that she was too terrified to let it all go because if she did, she would lose control over it and perhaps make it much worse.  It was a risk that she wasn't quite ready to take yet, or at least not without some help in taking it.  There was only one place where she felt comfortable enough to seek the kind of help she was going to need.  It was a place where she could block out the world and become one with her inner self.  An enchanting place where she could feel the divine energy, love, peace and serenity all around her.  It had been years since she had been there last, so she was looking forward to her destination with great anticipation.

As she pushed that last peddle that brought her to the top of the hill, she looked up at the beauty all around and suddenly became overwhelmed with emotion.  A tidal wave of tears began to flow down her cheeks much like the ocean waves rolling off the cliffs right in front of her.  She had finally arrived, high atop the hill cliff at this dramatically profound and peaceful place.   Every fine detail was just as she had remembered it.

As she laid her bike down in the grass, she took a long deep breath and then just stood there for a few minutes, while absorbing all the positive energy around her.  She removed her shoes so that she could feel the coolness of the soft green grass between her toes.  She continued to observe and appreciate all of the beauty of the unspoiled nature all around her.  Then as she began to walk towards the masterfully restored lighthouse that had been there for many years, she saw another very familiar site.  It was the site of the large stone bench on the other side of the lighthouse overlooking the ocean cliffs.  She felt as though the energy from the stone bench was pulling her towards it, just as it had done once before.  As she continued to approach the stone bench, the energy became more intense and yet very welcoming.  It was as if someone was reaching a loving hand out to her.  As she sat down on the stone bench, she immediately felt a sense of overwhelming peace and calming move throughout her body.  Her long hair was blowing in the warm breeze as she sat there and closed her eyes.  She began breathing slowly inhaling and exhaling, while taking in the soothing scents and sounds of the ocean just over the cliff in front of her.  She was in a place of serenity going deep within her soul and she felt wonderful.

All of sudden from over her left shoulder, she heard a soft voice.  She couldn't make out if it was a male or female voice, only that it it seemed to have a kind of melody in its tone.  She listened carefully and she heard the voice saying over and over, "Let Go and Let God".   She turned to her left to see who the owner of the voice was but saw no one.   So she began to wonder if it was her own inner voice, or perhaps it was the voice of an angel's guidance. She thought for second and chose to believe it was the voice of an angel.  At that precise moment of belief, she began to feel a strong vacuuming force pulling something from her.  It was as if someone had attached a vacuum hose to her body and was now vacuuming out all the worry and stress that she had been carrying for so long.  She realized that she was now free and willing to hand over the control to a much higher power.  Again she heard the voice say "Let Go and Let God and everything will be okay.  God will provide".   So she inhaled deeply and then exhaled and left it all go.  As she did this, she watched through her mind's eye, how it all moved from her soul and out through the vacuum hose.  Then again through her mind's eye, she saw a beautiful and magnificent emerald green light glowing brightly all around her.  She suddenly felt healed with a sense of relief and renewed energy.  Now she was definitely ready to begin her journey back down the hill and return to her life's path.

So she began to very slowly open her eyes.  Once clearly open and back to herself, she suddenly realized that she wasn't high atop the hill.  She had been lying on the sofa in the comfort of her own home.  She had not physically gone to that beautiful hilltop on her bike as she had done so, once before many years ago... or had she?
